Buying a CT scanner for your veterinary surgery is a very big decision, there are many options available to you, one of the best value for money options is to look for a refurbished system. MIUS offer a range of refurbished systems that have been carefully selected to provide you with a reliable imaging system, giving years of service, with the peace of mind offered by a full warranty covering all parts of the scanner. We appreciate that there are many questions that need answers and hopefully this short article can do just that.
Where are MIUS refurbished CT scanners sourced from?
The world’s a big place and there are many sources for us to buy equipment from, but we’re a picky bunch at MIUS! We source systems from all over the globe, we get offered A LOT of scanners, but we only buy the select few, we need to make sure the system has had a gentle life and been looked after and routinely maintained according to the manufacturers specification. Many centres we buy from have a rolling update scheme where they automatically get a new scanner after a set period of time, even if the system has not had much use. At the end of the day our reputation lies with the products we install and we don’t want a scanner to let you or us down.
What if it is sourced from abroad? will I have to learn French to use it?
France is a great country, great wines, great food, but they do like to go out on a limb with odd keyboards! Don’t worry all systems supplied by MIUS have English keyboards and control panels, all of the software is in English. We wouldn’t actually source a system with foreign control panels for resale, they would be used for spare parts only…..
Are they old fashioned or out of date?
Not at all, we offer 16 slice systems at a minimum and many of our customers actually go for 64 slice units offering quite staggering image quality – for less than the price of a new 16 slice system! We even offer 128 slice systems, but that’s just showing off. Our systems are modern air cooled units which allow fast rotation speeds and quick scans, they don’t overheat when you have a high patient load, meaning you can have high patient throughput without worrying about having to stop the system to let it cool down. The fast scan speeds of our systems also mean you can carry out all sorts of veterinary imaging including cardiac imaging without having movement artefact.
And the software – is it veterinary?
The software that comes with CT scanners allows easy control over the scanning and acquisition process, MIUS also provide veterinary protocols allowing even quicker and easier control, making life simpler for the user. When it comes to reading and rendering the images, we would suggest using an external software such as Horos which is much more intuitive than the manufacturer supplied versions for reviewing.
But what about the Tube?
Indeed, the tube. We look for systems that have had recent tube replacements, meaning that you need not worry about the tube any more than when buying a new system. If we have the confidence to put a 12 month warranty on all parts of the scanner, including the detector and tube, then this ought to give you an indication of the confidence we have in the systems we supply. We even offer longer 5 years warranties for absolute peace of mind.
Other parts, Servicing, Repairs…does MIUS do this?
Absolutely! We have stock of spare parts for systems from all of the major manufacturers available from our head office in Gloucester, in fact we have a new 12,000 square foot CT and MRI centre opposite our HQ, this centre holds vast stocks of spare parts; tubes, detectors, power units, etc as well as complete CT units. We look after this sort of equipment for NHS trusts and as a result we have to have resources available. A full range of service contracts are available, from planned preventative maintenance contracts through to fully comprehensive contracts. Our CT engineers are all manufacturer trained and time served, so you can be guaranteed of the same if not better service from MIUS as you would from the main manufacturers, with another huge benefit….reduced costs.
Can I have it in Blue?
Why not, in fact you can have it any colour you want! As part of our refurbishment process panels can be painted how you like them, we draw the line at Tartan paint though, it’s just not cool.
Do MIUS do the system installation?
Yes, we have a team of trained CT fitters who carry out the complete installation to a prepared room. We plan installs to have minimal disruption to the day to day operation of the surgery. The install typically takes a week. At the end of the week you’ll have a system which is fully operational and integrated into your existing IT networks. Once the system has been physically installed we then carry out user training to get you scanning and reading images. After this, further training from an external company who may be reading your images, such as VetCT, would be beneficial for your ongoing development.
If you have any other questions you’d like answered, please feel free to get in touch with us, we’re always happy to discuss CT scanners and what we can offer you.
