Question: Should I have my Medical ultrasound scanner serviced? Surely modern technology is much more reliable these days?
Answer: As Medical ultrasound scanning equipment has evolved and become more sophisticated. The equipment is more reliant on software in comparison to earlier systems which were heavily driven by hardware. As with other technological industries, software has become an integral part of product design and whilst this has allowed for equipment to make technological advancements and be smaller in size. In many ways, the equipment is now more vulnerable to problems as a result of several technologies interfacing with one another. A modern ultrasound system now generally operates with system hardware for the scanner itself, hardware for the PC side of the system, software for the ultrasound system and software for the PC system also. In short, there are more things to go wrong with a modern system now and a large percentage of the callouts we attend revolve around software and / or network based faults.
Question: If the system is mainly running on software now, doesn’t that mean there is less actual hardware and there is now no need to be carrying out an actual site visit? Can’t the software just be serviced remotely?
Answer: Unfortunately no. With all the PC hardware that is often needed, the systems require constant cooling and ventilation and if essential internal cleaning and maintenance is not performed, this can result in overheating, performance issues and eventual breakdown. Question: What exactly is carried out during a service visit on my equipment?
Answer: A service visit presents an opportunity to assess and correct any problems before they develop into a full breakdown event. During a major service visit, we perform the following tasks:
- Functional check of the entire system in all modes including all peripherals such as ECG, printers and network connected devices.
- Internal inspection of the system whereby we inspect and clean all wiring looms, connections, board seats, fans, filters and vents .
- Mechanical check and lubrication of wheels, brakes, control panels and any moving parts.
- Back up of all critical data such as application presets, hardware keys and network information.
- Calibration and diagnostic test where available.
- Health check on all batteries at board and system level.
- Electrical safety tests on system, probes and peripherals to IEC 60601 standard.
- Quality Assurance testing of probes and system to determine image quality benchmarking
- Provide a full technical report of service tasks and any required work with follow up tasks clearly advised. As well as a Quality Assurance Certificate with image print outs and electrical safety test results for your records
